We hope you will enjoy meeting our hard-working staff, most of whom have been working with us for many years and are like family to us.
They all love birds and take excellent care of our collection.

We are often asked about the individual care that our babies receive in such a large breeding operation. I can assure you that we have a dedicated, highly-trained, and hard working staff that truly cares about the birds in their care- our babies are well-loved!

Argelia Hernandez, our Nursery Manager, is extremely dedicated to the babies under her care! Here she is shown cuddling a baby Blue & Gold Macaw. Chelo (her nickname) has been with us for over sixteen years. She has hand-fed many thousands of baby birds. Her duties include incubation of eggs, hand-feeding chicks, culturing chicks for potential bacteria, banding the chicks, nursery records, DNA sexing, weaning, and general nursery management. That's a LOT of work!

Adan Lopez is our Livestock Manager, shown here with a baby Yellow-Thighed Caique. Adan is in charge of our feeding program and breeding operations. He has been with us for twelve years. His duties include pair selection, aviary construction, monitoring of egg production, monitoring the health of the breeding collection, and is in charge of the diet preparation.

Our hand-feeder, Monica Martinez, with a baby melanistic Stella Lory Monica has been with us for over thirteen years. She is in charge of all nursery duties on the week-end. Monica talks with the babies a lot and is very gentle with them.

Perla Ortiz has been with us since 3/00 and is now our reliable evening hand-feeder. Perla is shown here with a baby Blue and Gold Macaw, one of her favorites. She really loves the baby macaws, especially the Hahn's Macaw babies. Perla is very gentle with the chicks and we are very pleased to have her on our staff!

Alberto Monroy, our Ranch Manager, has been with us for over 25 years! Alberto cares for the entire ranch single-handedly and is in charge of all operations at Rancho Papagallo.

Here is Alberto with a pair of our young domestic Rose-Breasted Cockatoos that we have held back for breeding. The ranch birds all love Alberto! He has taught many of the ranch birds to talk and can handle several of them. He knows all the birds as individuals.

Our adorable watchdogs, Casey and Maggie Mae, are Jack Russell Terriers!

Here is our resident Insect-Control Manager, Mr. Gecko, a Madagascan Giant Day Gecko. We have owned him for many years.

Mr. Gecko has free reign in the house but prefers to spend most of his time in the kitchen as he loves to be around activity and warmth. He loves to nap on the warm fax machine!

We lost our beloved Mr. Gecko in 1/02. We went gecko-less for eleven months and
could stand it no more; we procured Mr. Gecko II. and Mrs. Gecko in 12/03.

Here is our newest insect controller, Mr. Gecko II., sitting on the mask from New Guinea where he sleeps every night. He loves to peek out of the mask's mouth every morning to survey his world, a little office area off our kitchen. His mate, Mrs. Gecko (what else?), lives with the Mr. in our kitchen, dining room, and family room. They take care of any and all flying, hopping, or creeping insects! They also love prepared fruit baby food and fresh fruit juices.

Our resident lounge lizard - Asian Water Dragon, Osvaldo, reminds the staff to take a break once in a while. He lounges by his indoor pond. Osvaldo was hatched from an egg here about seven years ago and was raised by us and is extremely tame.
We owned his mother, Mondo, for over twelve years.

Here is Maynard, the Wonder Mynah, in our nursery. We hatched Maynard from an egg and he grew up in the nursery. He keeps us company while we are hand-feeding. See all of our family pet birds!

Maynard is a talented talker and sings Chinese opera and the X-Files theme song.
